Alonso to look at ‘all possibilities’ before moving out of F1

Fernando Alonso is keen to seek all opportunities to win another title within the Formula 1 series before he looks for anything else outside for the 2018 racing season.

Alonso’s McLaren contract ends at the end of this year. From past three seasons, there was not even one podium finish for the team despite all the hard work.

McLaren’s engine trouble with its supplier Honda is well known in the F1 circuit and Alonso has grown tired of waiting for progress on that front. The Spaniard is planning to decide on the future course by the end of the summer break but he assures he will give first priority to drive and win in the F1 category before looking at other series.

“I would look at another team first — Formula One is still my priority and my life and winning a world championship is what I am hoping for,” he told CNN.

“If I don’t see any clear project that will allow me to fight for the win I will look outside F1 — but that’s [a decision I will make around] November-December. I will try all the possibilities before that.”

Options for 2018 are fairly limited for Alonso. The top three teams — Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull have all more or less said they will stick to the current driver line up for next season and have made no indications of interest towards Alonso. Apart from McLaren, Renault is the only team which may want to look at a change of drivers for next season.

So what will it take for McLaren to make sure he stays, Alonso said, “How competitive we will be. Everyone will have their opinion of what we need to be competitive — I have mine.

“I won’t share it now, but I have mine. If that happens then I will consider to stay and win with McLaren.”

Apart from F1, Alonso also took part in the Indy500 this year and had a great chance of winning before an engine failure at the end. Alonso says he is interested in getting the three famous crowns, the Monaco Grand Prix, Le Mans and Indy 500, but getting his third world title is a bit higher in his list of priorities now.

“My first priority is F1 — winning the third world championship, but I want to attempt the Triple Crown as well.

“It may happen. I would like to go back there [to Indy] but maybe not in the very near future.”
