Force India to bring all operations under one roof

After successfully defending their fourth place in the constructor’s championship, Force India is planning to bring all its F1 activities under one roof to increase efficiency.

In 2017, the team scored their best record of 187 points and stood firm in the fourth place for the second consecutive year.

According to Technical director Andrew Green an “injection of funds” made it possible to speed up the development work in the last season.

The team plans to build on its success and wants to bring all their operations to one site by expanding its facility at Silverstone.

Chief operating officer Otmar Szafnauer says: “Co-location helps a lot if everyone is under the same roof, which we are not as we’re split 75/25,”

“Hopefully in two or three years’ time, we’ll have everyone under the same roof.”

Force India has used Toyota’s wind tunnel facility in Cologne since 2015.

According to Szafnauer, the outfit is working hard to improve its German operations and is looking at ways to increase its manufacturing capacity and CFD efficiency.

“More manufacturing capacity helps, and wind tunnel efficiency and CFD efficiency also helps,” he said.

“So there are some big pieces out there that we still need to put in place to either take that next step or stay where we are.

“Some of those things are happening now; some will be in place in the short term while others are more medium term.

“We are working with them [Toyota] to make their tunnel more efficient. Some of the changes have come to fruition already.”

To make sure their plan comes to fruition, the team needed to win the fourth again and get the prize money that comes with the ranking.

“Fourth is massively important because for us, having the smallest budget in F1 means the discretionary part of our budget is really small,” Szafnauer said.

“If the prize money dips at all, it’s the discretionary part we will be unable to spend, and it’s this part that gives us our development capabilities and doing all our experiments to be able to develop the car’s performance.

“So it’s very important to keep that.”
