From an unexpected move from RedBull at the summer break it has been announced that Alex Albon will replace Pierre Gasly. However, the changes take effect IMMEDIATELY. Gasly will return to sister team Toro Rosso while Albon takes his new seat from Spa.
This will be a controversial decision from RedBull and may face some fan backslash. Some argue Gasly needed more time and was beginning to show signs of pace relative to his popular team mate Max Verstappen.
Alex Albon has impressed fans and the paddock alike with his pace and consistency since joining F1 this season. His rookie year numbers speak for themselves – 16 points from 12 races in a car that is competing at the lower end of the midfield.
Unfortunately for Gasly he has been struggling with pace all year round – usually just under a second of the pace from his team mate. His numbers also don’t look impressive – having scored only 63 points as compared to 181 from his team mate. Gasly has also failed to secure a podium thus far while Max has won 2 races and earned another 3 podium finishes.
Has Redbull made a move too soon? Time will tell.
