Kubica’s test run impressed Hülkenberg

Nico Hülkenberg was impressed by Kubica’s 142 laps during the Hungaroring in season testing. He said it was ‘obviously a great comeback’ for Kubica who drove the hybrid machinery for the first time in 2017.

Kubica’s start was a little shaky but once he got a hold of the car, his form was back to normal, a fan favourite like his earlier time in F1. After driving the 2012 car for practice, Kubica drove Renault’s RS17  and clocked the fourth fastest time on day two of the testing.

Kubica raced in Formula 1 from 2006 till 2010 for BMW Sauber F1 Team and Renault. He won nine podium wins and one victory in Canada GP just a year after escaping a violent crash on the same track.

In 2011 Kubica had a major accident in Ronde di Andora rally which resulted in partial amputation and lot of fractures bringing his F1 career to an abrupt halt. But nothing would stop Kubica from coming back to his favourite race.

After six years of break, he returned to  Formula 1 and delighted his fans with a fantastic test drive. Renault’s current star driver Hülkenberg was impressed, “To be honest, I don’t have much information. I wasn’t on-site. I had some information, and I obviously saw the lap times. I think, for him personally, obviously a great comeback

“After the severe accident and injuries he had to come back and drive a modern Formula 1 car and to do 140 laps, just like that, is quite impressive.

“Especially at a track like Budapest, which is very physical. So respect for that. And I think the performance also, it seemed alright.

“So I’m not sure what’s going to happen, what Renault wants to do, but the test was OK, I think.”
