New Kimi’s F1 test blitz: What it means for Mercedes

Kimi Antonelli, under the guidance of Toto Wolff, is accelerating his journey towards a career in Formula 1. The 17-year-old talent is reported to have embarked on a rigorous F1 testing schedule, beginning with a two-day session in a Mercedes car from two seasons ago at the Imola circuit before Easter.

The excitement around Antonelli grows as he’s set to take the wheel at the Red Bull Ring on April 16, indicating a year filled with extensive testing opportunities, as per La Repubblica’s reports. This series of tests across 2024 aims to evaluate Antonelli’s potential to step into a significant role within Mercedes, especially with considerations for the team’s future as Lewis Hamilton moves on.

“After that, the German team wants to understand whether to choose him for life after (Lewis) Hamilton,” the Italian publication noted, signaling Mercedes’ interest in grooming Antonelli for a pivotal position. In addition to his appearances at Imola and the Red Bull Ring, Antonelli is slated to test at “various European tracks,” marking a critical phase in his development as a Formula 1 driver.
