Daniil Kvyat’s prayers to remain in F1 got answered on Wednesday when Ferrari announced him as their development driver for 2018.
After a series of disappointing races, Kvyat lost his race seat at Toro Rosso and had been looking hard to find a way to stay within the sport.
The Russian driver was in touch with Williams to try his chance at their second seat for 2018. But the British team is set to go with Sergey Sirotkin as their driver along with Lance Stroll. The announcement is expected to happen by the end of January.
Since he could not snag the Williams seat, Kvyat got himself a deal with Ferrari as their development driver.
At Ferrari, Kvyat will be mostly working on the simulator and may even get some test running. The actual details of his roles are yet to be announced.
Kvyat debuted with Toro Rosso in 2014, and then he was promoted to Red Bull in the next season to take over Sebastian Vettel’s seat.
But the Russian had trouble with his performance and was involved in too many crashes. So Red Bull decided to put him back in the junior team and promoted Max Verstappen to the senior squad after the 2016 Spanish Grand Prix.
Despite many chances, Kvyat did not show any improvement, and Red Bull saw his recklessness at the race start as a liability.
The Russian was benched for the Malaysian and Japanese Grands Prix. Kvyat’s race at the United States GP was his last with Toro Rosso. He scored one point in that race. But it was too little and too late for him. Red Bull finally cut him loose from their driver program.
