Ricciardo: Hamilton has a cooler head than Vettel

Lewis Hamilton’s level-headedness and ability to stay calm in tense situations was one of the reasons why he won the title this year says, Daniel Ricciardo.

The current world champion clinched his title at Mexico, with two more races remaining in the season. Between him and his chief rival Sebastian Vettel, Hamilton was more consistent throughout the season, scoring race points in every grand prix while Vettel suffered two DNFs.

At the Singapore GP, an aggressive attempt to defend his inside line caused a collision, forcing Vettel to retire from the race.

In Baku, Vettel lost a potential victory due to a penalty incurred when he rammed into Hamilton when driving behind the safety car.

Talking at the Baku paddock after the race, Ricciardo said: “Lewis’s season – I respect that,”

“He had a great car, but I think Seb’s car was also as good and Lewis just maintained a cooler head, a better level of consistency and composure. You have to respect that.

“He was always very fast and I think he drove a very good season.”

Red Bull was hoping to challenge the German team in the constructors’ championship this season. But a problem with the team’s correlations tools set them back a few races at the beginning of the year, and as the season continued, they could not catch up with the top two teams.

Red Bull finished the season as a distant third in the Constructor’s championship while their drivers Ricciardo and teammate Max Verstappen finished at fifth and sixth, respectively.

“Unfortunately Mercedes has been really strong for the last four years,” said the Australian. “They have been the team to beat.

“We thought this year would be a chance for us to really challenge them. We challenged them some races but not enough to fight for the title.

“In the end, myself and Max were fifth and sixth in the championship so we not come near to what we wanted.

“What we need to do for next year to have a chance is that we need to start the season stronger. That’s where we lost a lot of our momentum this year.

“At the beginning of the season, we were too far behind Mercedes and Ferrari.

“We made a lot of progress, which was really good, so we need to continue that momentum.”
