Sauber prefers to race young drivers

Frederic Vasseur took over as team principal for Sauber last month and his first order of business was to figure out how to resolve the engine issues for the next season.

He handled that by calling off the deal with Honda and signing a multi-year contract with Ferrari.

At the announcement, Scuderia’s president Sergio Marchionne felt Sauber could become a “kind of junior team”  where the younger Ferrari drivers can train for Formula 1 racing.

Sauber Boss Frederic Vasseur seems to agree with Marchionne on racing the young drivers like Charles Leclerc but believes it is too early to think of next year’s line-up.

“As a team, it would make sense to have someone like Leclerc or other young drivers,” Vasseur told Motorsport.

He added: “It is a bit too early to speak about drivers, to be honest.

“We had to close the [engine] deal quite quickly. It would be a mistake to mix the drivers into the discussion. But we will have the discussion in the next few weeks.”
