This is how Leclerc plans to become stronger

Charles Leclerc did not get a confidence boost from his recent points haul. So he is trying to identify his weaknesses to improve further.

The rookie reached Q2 in the last four races and scored points in the last three. Many believe it is an achievement when driving a Sauber.

Meanwhile, his teammate Marcus Ericsson never made it to Q2 and scored points at only at Bahrain.

When asked if his confidence is high after the last three races, he said: “Strangely it’s not that high.

“OK, they are good results, but after every race, I always try to find a negative about myself and try to improve them.

“It has gone well for now but it’s not like I feel completely confident. I’m not someone that always feels confident about himself.

“I’m always trying to improve and I think that’s also a strength.”

Leclerc, a Ferrari junior driver, said he could not find any faults with his driving in the recent Montreal race that saw him qualify to 13th and finishing at 10th.

But he had to work around a brake problem during the race and believes it is an area the Swiss outfit will have to resolve it. Leclerc suffered from a brake issue even in the Monaco race.

When asked to point out a negative from the Canada race, Leclerc said: “That’s a difficult one because I think we really maximised this weekend.

“As a team, we can still do some improvements with the brakes because we are still struggling.

” [Also] my Q2 lap could’ve been a little bit better when you see that only six-hundredths was separating me from P11.”

The rookie still cannot believe his results. While happy with it, he says things could drastically change in the upcoming France, Austria and Britain races as aerodynamics will play a bigger role.

“We need to be a little bit careful because I believe that the next four or five races will be a lot more difficult for us,” said Leclerc. We have to see but I’m extremely happy with the races we’ve made until now.

“We have taken every opportunity that we had to score points and of this, we should be very proud. You need more downforce on tracks like Le Castellet or the four or five other races after.

“That’s where we are lacking at the moment so we’ll work and hopefully we’ll improve but at the moment it’s our downside.”
