The 4 time World Champion locked-up on his attempt to pass Bottas on Turn One after the safety car reset.
The German driver got jumped in the pits by Bottas because of the safety car. After both Ferrari and Mercedes pitted for the Ultrasoft tyres Vettel attempted a move on Bottas as he was being pressurised by Hamilton on the restart.
Making a very late move on Bottas meant Vettel locked-up and left the track, rejoining in 4th, just behind his team mate. Towards the closing stages of the race Sergio Perez got a good toe from the German down the long straight and sailed through to 4th place. Perez eventually finished in the podium due to Botta’s retirement.
“I don’t think it was overly optimistic to jump down the inside,” Said a disgruntled Vettel. “I was a bit trapped because I couldn’t see where I was relative to Turn One and once I jumped down the inside I locked up.
“I wasn’t overly late because otherwise I don’t make the corner at all but I did make it, just. I think I lost places because also the lock-up decelerated the car as much as it could.
“Other than that I think it was a strong race and that’s how it goes sometimes.”
You got to take the rough with the smooth. It’s only the 4th race another 17 to go
Nerves! Bad driving there dude. Not worthy of a world champion! Better luck “nerves” next time boo hoo
